[edit] Slaveholder?

Nicholls was a lawyer and never owned slaves although his wife's family did.

Now that would actually be a very interesting distinction, especially for a politician. Do you have a source for that? If so, we should put it in the article. I'm the one who inserted text to the effect that he had owned slaves, based on...
