(Most of the "fraction" page has now moved to fraction (mathematics). Consequently, much of the talk below refers to that page, and should be continued there if it concerns issues that are no more detailed here.)

[edit] Expansion and disambiguation

This latest expansion of the article goes just a little too far in places. Some of the information - e.g. on lowest common denominator - should be on the rational fraction page, not here. Why? Because this is a disambiguation page. Paul Beardsell 13:42, 20 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Why is this a disambiguation page? I came here by numerator and denominator and was rather disappointed by what I found. It does not deal with obvious fractions such as 0.33333333... or many of the points raised in Whatlinkshere target=Fraction, and cannot unless it turns into a more complete article. 20 Feb 2004 (UTC)

As the disambiguation message says: Go back and fix the links! Go to numerator and denominator and point to vulgar fraction or to rational number. It doesn't have to be a disambiguation page. But it was one before you added your extra info (much of it useful and retained). But disambiguation is needed! But the stuff I culled is not suitable for a disambiguation page: Its proper home is in the pages linked to from the disambiguation page. The 20 month old rational fraction page is merely a recipe book for performing arithmetic on fractions. I reckon it should be moved to vulgar fraction arithmetic. What do you think? The current situation is not ideal. I am trying to improve it. Unfortunately it has to be done incrementally. Paul Beardsell 14:41, 20 Feb 2004 (UTC)

I have an idea: Take all the vulgar fraction stuff off to a new vulgar fraction page. Left here will be disambiguation between common usage of fraction, a link to vulgar fraction with all the sub-categories quickly named but not explained. Also left here would be a link to partial fractions. Numerator and denominaor can then reference vulgar fraction. Paul Beardsell 14:47, 20 Feb 2004 (UTC)

I felt it was really time to really disambiguate: As there are even meanings of "fraction" that do not concern mathematics at all, it is no longer justified to leave them at the end of 20 special cases of rational numbers. I tried, however, to leave several "direct" links to the main meanings of fractions in mathematics. I hope you agree. MFH 18:11, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Markup

According to the style guide we are supposed to avoid HTML such as ”. I removed the paragraph markup from the article. Paul Beardsell 21:36, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Disambiguation

I may be biased, but it seems to me that fraction (mathematics) is much more common than the other interpretations. Shouldn't, then, the fraction (mathematics) article be moved here, and this page moved to fraction (disambiguation)? -- Meni Rosenfeld (talk) 15:31, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

The advantage of having the dab page here is that it's clear which articles | linking to here are linked incorrectly - all of them. With an actual article here, there's no way of knowing what shouldn't be linking here. Josh Parris#: 04:50, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
