From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franz Oppenhoff (born August 18, 1902 in Aachen, Germany; died March 25, 1945 in Aachen, Germany) was mayor of the city of Aachen in Germany.

After the German city of Aachen was taken by the Allies in World War II, Franz Oppenhoff was put into office as the major of Aachen on October 31, 1944.

On March 25, 1945, Oppenhoff was murdered in front of his home by the Nazi Werwolf commando operating behind the front line. Austrian Sepp Leitgeb was the trigger man - he was killed by a land mine as the commando made his way back to the Rhine river. The majority of the other commando members were caught and received prison sentences.
