[edit] Geography
Situated on the Mornington Peninsula and Port Phillip Bay, Frankston South is typically an upper, middle-class place compared to the counterpart of Frankston North (commonly referred to as The Pines) and is usually referred to as including some of the area east of Frankston CBD as well.
[edit] Subdivisions
The most expensive residential real estate in the City of Frankston is generally to be found in South Frankston. This is especially true in the area of Olivers Hill which affords some of the best bay views in Melbourne. This is also the case further south around the greener and leafier area bordering Mount Eliza, around the Humphries Road and Overport Road area, where larger blocks of land are to be found.
Comprised of areas like Mt Erin, Eliza Heights and others, Frankston South also features some beachfront, from Davey's Bay in the South to Frankston Beach in the North. Many properties overlook the coastline.
[edit] Schools
Schools such as Overport Primary, Derinya Primary, Frankston High and Mt Erin Secondary Collage can all be found in the Frankston South area. Frankston High School is considered to be one of the best public secondary schools in the state.[2], and housing in what is referred to as "the zone", i.e. Frankston High's student catchment area, is well sought after and appears frequently in real estate ads. Some schools in Mt. Eliza, also have their catchment areas overlap into parts of Frankston South.
The Sweetwater Creek reserve provides a native bush setting in the middle of the suburb, and has had considerable resources dedicated to its improvement.
[edit] Shopping
It has no major shopping areas as such due to its proximity to the Frankston CBD, but is well catered for by strip shopping centres in Norman Avenue and The Mall, on Overport Road.
[edit] Transport
Travel around the streets of Frankston South tends to be relatively simple, either by car, public transport (buses) or even by foot, it is well served by Moorooduc Highway and Nepean Highway.
[edit] Broadband Availability
Frankston South is predominantly serviced by the Mount Eliza Telephone Exchange which is currently ADSL enabled, however the Frankston South area is too far from this Exchange and also the Frankston exchange. ADSL2 which is planned for the Mount Eliza exchange will not be upgraded until at least 2007. That is not to say that Frankston South is a broadband dead spot, as much of the suburb is serviced by Cable Internet via ISP OptusNet.
