In the Superman stories published by DC Comics, Franklin Stern was the publisher of the Daily Planet newspaper, taking over from the TransNational Enterprises consortium which itself succeeded the villainous Lex Luthor.
Stern was a long-time friend of the editor, Perry White, although they often disagreed about politics. However, when falling profits forced him to sell the newspaper, this allowed Luthor to purchase it again, with dire consequences for the Planet and its staff. Shortly thereafter, the Planet fell into the hands of billionaire Bruce Wayne, who still owns the paper today.
At one point Stern was dating Ron Troupe's sister, however the outcome of this relationship is not known.
In the TV series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Stern bought the Planet in the final episode of Season One. He was played by James Earl Jones.
