[edit] Murder of Angelo Bruno

Sindone joined forces with Antonio Caponigro (the then-consigliere of the Philadelphia Mafia, their leader in Newark, New Jersey), John Simone (a 68 year-old capo), and Frank Tieri (the boss of the Genovese crime family) in a plan to overthrow Angelo Bruno.

Their motive for the killing stemmed from an earlier demand of Tieri's to take a cut from Caponigro's two million dollar bookmaking operation in Hudson County. Bruno pled his and Caponigro's case to the Commission, and they stopped Tieri from muscling in on Caponigro's operation (of which Bruno received a portion).

However, Tieri was determined to take over the bookmaking operation. Learning that Caponigro was planning to overthrow Bruno, Tieri said he could get the Commision's approval for the hit and provide other assistance. Tieri never went to the Commision, but he nevertheless told Caponigro he had the Commision's blessing.

An unknown gunman, believed to have been Caponigro's cousin Alfred Salerno, shot Angelo Bruno dead in his car on March 21, 1980.

[edit] Deaths of the conspirators

After Bruno's assassination, Sindone planned to become the underboss to Caponigro while Caponigro would be the new boss. Less than a month after Bruno's murder, however, Antonio Caponigro and his cousin were found stuffed in the trunks of two cars a few miles apart in the South Bronx. Apparently, the Commission had exacted revenge for what was, in actuality, an unsanctioned murder.

The other conspirators suffered similar fates: John Simone was found dead on September 17, 1980, and Sindone was found dead in an alley behind a variety store in South Philadelphia on October 29, 1980. He had been shot three times in the head.

The only conspirator who survived was John Stanfa, who drove Bruno to the murder site.
