Frank Manley was a Flint, MI educator in the 1930s. Through his friendship with wealthy industrialist, Charles Steward Mott, he started what became know as the modern community school, that is, a school that continues to serve the community after the closing bell has sounded. He opened gyms, swimming pools, and launched afterschool classes and activities for children and parents alike. His model was imitated nationwide. At its peak thousands of educators from around the world flocked to Flint annually to see Manley's community school model in action.
