Francois Steyn (born 14 May 1987) is a Springbok and Natal Sharks rugby player. After playing only ten matches for the Sharks in the 2006 Currie Cup (at Fly-half), Steyn was selected to represent South Africa in the Northern Hemisphere touring squad by national coach Jake White. Initially a questioned selection by many in the press, he silenced his doubters by having an impressive debut (in which he scored his first national try) at Left-Wing against Ireland. He acquitted himself well in what was a woeful team display. In his next international he was moved to Fullback against England and again performed well, scoring a long range drop-goal and receiving much praise, from fans and press alike, for his creativity and solid defence. He is now well known for hitting long range drop goals. Many tout him as a possible replacement for Percy Montgomery, South Africa's current first-choice Fullback, however, his full potential is yet to be seen as he is yet to play in his preferred position of Flyhalf for the national side.
