Franco D'Alessandro

Playwright Franco D'Alessandro (born June, 1969) is a New York native and first generation Italian-American who has lived and studied in the U.S.and Italy. His name first came to light in the mid 1990s when he had eight one-act plays produced Off-Off Broadway in five years. A two-time recipient of the prestigious Edward Albee artists residency, D'Alessandro has received many awards and residencies in the beginning of his career. In 2002 his two character play about Tennessee Williams and Anna Magnani, entitled Roman Nights, premiered Off-Broadway at the Daryl Roth 2 Theatre in Union Square. The production was a respectable critical and commercial success for the young writer, and the play went on to be produced in London in 2004 and in Prague (touring Eastern Europe) in 2006. Roman Nightsis headed for the silver screen in 2007/2008.
The writer, who speaks fluent Italian, is known to spend up to two months each year in Italy. In 2006 an Italian newspaper noted that D'Alessandro and Roman actress Lidia Vitale seem to be living out the artist/muse story he tells in the play Roman Nights.
Franco D'Alessandro also teaches drama in the New York City public schools.
