Francisco de Bobadilla
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Francisco de Bobadilla was a Spanish colonial administrator. In 1499, de Bobadilla was appointed to succeed Christopher Columbus as governor of Spain's new territories in the Americas by Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. Upon his arrival to Santo Domingo (current day Hispaniola) in August 1500, de Bobadilla upheld accusations of mismanagement made against Columbus, and had Columbus sent back to Spain.
In 1502, he was replaced as governor of Hispaniola by Nicolas de Ovando. On his voyage back to Spain, however, his ship was caught in a hurricane, and he drowned.
