IPA [fɾɐ̃'siʃku i'ʒinu kɾɐ'vɐiɾu lɔpɨʃ]) born in Lisbon on 12 April 1894, was a Portuguese politician and military man, having been the 13th President of the Portuguese Republic, between 1951 and 1958.
He was the son of João Carlos Craveiro Lopes, Portuguese army general and general governor of the Portuguese Indies and of Júlia Clotilde Salinas Cristiano.
He concluded his Colégio Militar studies by 1911, having then entered the Escola Politécnica de Lisboa, in the same year he joined a cavalry regiment.
During his presidency he had continuous problems with Salazar, who had chosen him to be President, so the dictator replaced him in 1958 as the presidential candidate of the regime. He was even invited by the Democratic Opposition to be their candidate, but refused. The regime, however, as compensation promoted him to Field Marshall. He was involved in the failed right-wing military attempt to overthrow Salazar, in 1961, led by the Defence Minister, general Júlio Botelho Moniz.
He died in Lisbon on 2 September 1964.
