Francis Joseph Cole was born in London on February 3, 1872. In 1906 he joined the University College Reading (now University of Reading) from the University of Liverpool and the following year was promoted to become the first Professor of Zoology.
He then began setting up the Cole Museum of Zoology, encouraging overseas visitors to the Department to donate specimens.
