Frances Hardinge

Frances Hardinge (born 1973) is a British author best known for her novel Fly By Night which won the Branford Boase Award in 2006 and the School Library Journal Best Book Award. Frances Hardinge is often seen wearing a black hat and enjoys dressing in old fashion clothing [1].

Frances Hardinge was born and grew up in Kent, England and dreamed of writing at the age of four. She studied English at Oxford University and was the founder member of a writers' workshop there.

Her writing career started after winning a short story magazine competition. Shortly after winning she wrote Fly By Night in her spare time and showed it to a published after pressure from a friend.

Frances has recently signed a three novel deal with Macmillan Publishers [1] continuing the novel series of the Fractured Kingdom (Fly By Night). It has been announced that Verdigris Deep, another one of her novels is to be published in 2007[2].
