The three founders of the monastery at Citeaux: Saints Robert, Alberic, and Stephen Harding. This painting is commemorative and depicts the founding in 1111 and shows the three saints venerating the Blessed Virgin Mary. The figures are, from left to right, Stephen Harding (carrying the scroll and seal, in a white, Cistercian habit), Saint Robert of Molesme (in a Benedictine habit and already beatified at the time of the painting and therefore nearest Mary), and Saint Alberic (in a Cistercian habit with cowl, holding the monastery itself, as it was he who the painter attributed the gift of land to).
The two-dimensional work of art depicted in this image is in the public domain in the United States and in those countries with a copyright term of life of the author plus 100 years. This photograph of the work is also in the public domain in the United States (see Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp.).
