[edit] Summary
Description:
Illustration for Foucault pendulum article.
Precession (with respect to the Earth) of the plane of swing of a pendulum. (Pendulum located on the Northern hemisphere) Pattern of swing with a ratio of 22 swings to complete a precession cycle. Only eleven swings are visible, because the second eleven trace exactly the same path as the first eleven. A normal Foucault pendulum complets several thousand swings in the course of completing a full precession cycle. This image shows the precession in exaggerated form, to emphasize certain properties.
