The Fourth United States Army was activated in 1932. The mission at that activation was to be a training army which was for defense of the Pacific coast. The headquarters of the Fourth Army were at the Presidio of San Francisco. Some past commanders were:

- John L. DeWitt
- Jonathan Wainwright
- William M. Hoge
Fourth Army was consolidated with Fifth United States Army in July 1971 at Fort Sam Houston.
