Four benevolent animals

In Chinese mythology, Joseph Campbell identifies four benevolent animals that took abodes in the gardens of the palace of the Chinese Empire during the legendary period of the Yellow Emperor.

  1. The qilin(麒麟) qi2lin2, lord of warm-blooded quadrupeds.
  2. The dragon(龙) long2, lord of scaly animals.
  3. The tortoise(乌龟) wu1gui1, lord of mollusks.
  4. The phoenix (凤凰) feng4huang2, lord of birds.
