Found a Peanut

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Found a Peanut" is a children's song, popularly sung on road trips to the tune of Clementine.

The lyrics are as follows:

Found a peanut, found a peanut, found a peanut last night. Last night I found a peanut, found a peanut last night.
Cracked it open, cracked it open, cracked it open last night Last night I cracked it open, cracked it open last night.
It was green and mouldy, it was green and mouldy, it was green and mouldy last night, last night it was green and mouldy, it was green and mouldy last night.
Ate it anyway, ate it anyway, ate it anyway last night, last night I ate it anyway, ate it anyway last night.

It goes on in this format with different substitutes for the phrase "Found a Peanut," in the following sequence:

  • "Got a stomach ache"
  • "Called the doctor"
  • "Penicillin"
  • "Didn't work"
  • "Operation"
  • "Died Anyway"
  • "Went to Heaven"
  • "Wouldn't take me "
  • "Went the other way"
  • "Didn't want me"
  • "Woke up"
  • "It was a dream"
  • "Found a peanut" ...

The song thus repeats itself ad infinitum.

In some versions of the song the lyrics "last night" are replaced by "just now" or "yesterday", or "Wouldn't take me" by "Kicked an angel" or "Punched St. Peter". An alternative to "Penicillin" / "Didn't Work" / "Operation" is "Cut Me Open" / "Took the Peanut Out" / "Sewed Me Up Again" / "Left The Scissors In" / "Cut Me Open Again". Another possibility is replacing "Didn't want me," "Woke up," and "It was a dream" with "Shovelling coal." Another common variation on "last night" is "yesterday" which scans more suitably. It is the example used by in the now defunct comedy "This Morning With Richard Not Judy (TMWRNJ) by Stewart Lee and Richard Herring.

Further lyrical variation coming after "Went to Heavean":

  • Didn't like it there
  • Went the other way
  • Found a job there
  • Selling peanuts

Ex: Found a peanut, found a peanut, found a peanut just now. Just now I found a peanut, found a peanut just now.
