Fort Halifax (Maine)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fort Halifax was a U.S. colonial outpost on the Kennebec River at modern Winslow, Maine.

[edit] History

Fort Halifax, a National Historic Landmark and the oldest blockhouse in the United States[1], was built by English settlers in 1754-1755, to defend the upper Kennebec River Valley from possible attack by the French and their Native American allies.

On April 1st of 1987, a flood dismantled the blockhouse. Some logs from it were found as far south as forty miles. The fort was reconstructed on the original site, with as much of the original materials as were recovered.[2]
