Formation! Iron wall formation (Japanese: 結成！鉄壁のフォーメーション, - Kessei! Teppeki fōmēshon) is episode 110 of the anime series Naruto. The episode's storyline is from the Sasuke Retrieval manga arc.

The episode begins with two examiners carrying a large load of documents commenting on how Tsunade really abuses her people and then they see Sakura lying on a bench. Sakura wakes up and begins crying. Upon hearing of Sasuke's defection, Tsunade orders Shikamaru Nara to assemble a team of genin to go after Sasuke and bring him back.

Tsunade tells Shikamaru that he should get Naruto. First he gets Choji to come out by eating a bag of potato chips and saving the last one for Choji who frantically grabs it. "I won't let another soul have the last potato chip!" he comments. While Naruto complains that they should be getting Shino, Akamaru jumps at Choji trying to get the last potato chip but Choji eats it. Kiba hitches along. Neji sees Shikamaru and Choji explains the situation to him. Neji agrees to go.

Shikamaru makes one final statement.

Shikamaru: "I don't have a deep attachment to Sasuke. Nor is he someone that I like. But he is one of Konoha village's shinobi, a comrade. That is why we risk our lives to save him. This is the Konoha view. Even though I don't like doing troublesome things, I am responsible for your lives."

Sakura tearfully sees them off, pleading with Naruto to bring Sasuke back. Naruto promises that he will, using Guy's and Lee's "nice-guy" pose and saying that it's the promise of a lifetime. Kiba teases him about it, and Naruto responds that he doesn't go back on his word; that's his way of the ninja. Finally, Team Shikamaru sets out on its' quest. Meanwhile in a small clearing, Sound Four tells Sasuke that he must die at once.

• Shikamaru originally wanted a team of chunins and jonins to go on this mission, which shows the importance of it.

• Shikamaru's formation is as follows...

-Kiba will lead the group, using his and Akamaru's ability to smell any form of scent. This way, they can tell if they are on the right path and any sense of danger ahead can be warned out to the others.

-Shikamaru is second in the line. This gives him the best place to hear Kiba's warnings and also gives him the ability to command the team most efficiently.

-Naruto is in the middle, since he has quick reactions and Shadow-Clones. If something were to happen, Naruto could jump to the back or to the front and be ready without really trying.

-Choji is second to last and is meant to be brute force if something were to happen. While not great in taijutsu, he is strong and can provide great defense when ready.

-Neji is last, using his byakugan to view the surrounding areas as far as he can. Since he's a skilled fighter, he's capable of holding his own if attacked, but is mainly used to scout out any signs of Sasuke, Sound Four, or possible ambushes.

• Rock Lee wanted to come along, but due to just getting done with the operation, his body wasn't ready to be in action.

• Shino was also sought to come along, since he is just as good as thinking ahead and could use his bugs to search for Sasuke, however, Shino was already on a different mission with his father.

• Sakura wasn't able come as Shikamaru told her that even she couldn't convince Sasuke to stay, and knew she wouldn't use force against him.

• As for the rest of the kunoichi,it is only guesed they weren't involved because...
  • Ino: Same as Sakura
  • Hinata: Already have a byakugan user
  • Tenten: Unknown, presumably out on a mission already.

• Numerically this episode is half way through the pre-timeskip series
