[edit] Looking for articles to work on?

Hello, Folksong. I'm SuggestBot, a Wikipedia bot that helps new members contribute to Wikipedia. Based on your previous edits, I have made a list of articles you might like to work on. I hope you find this useful. -- SuggestBot 01:48, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi there, this is ForteTuba (SuggestBot's owner). I'm dropping a note to ask you how I might make it better. If you have any ideas, including but not limited to improving the suggestions, the way the suggestions are presented, and the way SuggestBot told you about the suggestions, that would be great. I want to release it as a general-purpose tool soon and the more feedback you can give, the better it will be. Thanks for the help. ForteTuba 20:08, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Request for edit summary

Hi. I am a bot, and I am writing to you with a request. I would like to ask you, if possible, to use edit summaries a bit more often when you contribute. The reason an edit summary is important is because it allows your fellow contributors to understand what you changed; you can think of it as the "Subject:" line in an email. For your information, your current edit summary usage is 5% for major edits and 0% for minor edits. (Based on the last 150 major and 1 minor edits in the article namespace.)

This is just a suggestion, and I hope that I did not appear impolite. You do not need to reply to this message, but if you would like to give me feedback, you can do so at the feedback page. Thank you, and happy edits, Mathbot 01:30, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

I concur! But seriously, that's why I'm stopping by. Edit summaries are very helpful for other editors. Mrtea (talk) 20:32, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
I also agree. Had you made an edit summary and/or provided a citation when changing Larry H. Miller you could have avoided problems. -- MisterHand 02:22, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
Looks like I gotta edit summarize more often.--Folksong 03:31, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Potential Republican candidates in the 2008 U.S. presidential election

I noticed that in your last edit summary on the potential republican candidates in the 2008 US presidential election you wrote: "Fix Tancredo picture, FWIW the left right layout is impractical and offers no benefit over the standard pictures to the right system"

Since I put the pictures like that I wanted to explain why I moved the pictures this way, the reason is quite simply now every picture is close to the small biography of the person pictured and the text is denser i.e. there are no large blank spots, as there were see for instance here how it was. The situation was much worse for the democratic candidates see for instance here. The lay-out I made makes the articles easier to read and clearer. I hope I have convinced you of that. If you still have an issue with the way the page is layouted. I advice you take it to the articles talk page. -- C mon 12:46, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your edit to Michelle Malkin

Hi. I've just reverted your recent edit to this article. You changed it from

According to Malkin, she has been labelled ... by some Asian-American liberals

to

According to Malkin, she has been labelled ... by some Asian-Americans

(emphasis added). I'm guessing that you didn't notice the words I've emphasised at the start. Don't worry, we all make little mistakes like this.

More importantly, I'll try to provide a link to this claim by Ms Malkin. Do you have a link to non-liberal Asian-Americans calling her an Aunt Thomasina etc? Or to Malkin claiming non-liberal Asian-Americans have done so? (Warning: in this case, Google is probably not your friend. There are zillions of blog posts and comments on the web about "Why Michelle Malkin is Wonderful", "Why Michelle Malkin is Despicable", "Why People Who Say Michelle Malkin is Despicable are Despicable", etc, etc. They get very, very tedious.)

Cheers, CWC(talk) 07:02, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

  • Hello Chris, A simple message such as "You might have overlooked the phrase "According to Malkin" in your editing, please add any sources where non-liberal or apolitical Asian-Americans have criticized her." would have sufficed. Comments such as "I'm guessing that you didn't notice the words I've emphasised at the start. Don't worry, we all make little mistakes like this." and "Warning: in this case, Google is probably not your friend." can be interpreted as sarcastic, and in turn, uncivil and not in good faith. I personally know many apolitical Asian Americans who think her stance is akin to denying or being ashamed of her heritage, and when I was a member of the Republican Party, I disliked her stance as well. If you would check my edit history, I have a track record of being fair to liberal and conservative personalities alike. Happy editing. --Folksong 21:13, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
Sorry about that. Sometimes I type too much and think too little. No sarcasm was intended. I myself make mistakes like that far too frequently.
That comment about google was a sincere warning. As I've found out the hard way, googling for stuff about Ms Malkin tends to produce enormous numbers of hits (because bloggers write so much about her) and most of the stuff written about her is repetitive and tedious.
Feel free to delete this section once you've read this.
Best wishes, CWC(talk) 21:56, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
Chris, I sincerely appreciate your apology and your concern for the article. Keep up the good work.--Folksong 23:48, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Denver 2008

Hey, Folksong. We last spoke back in March regarding Gary Locke and the 2008 Presidential Election. I happened to notice you've switched your support from the GOP to the Democratic Party. Well, I'm happy to hear that first of all. And second, I wanted to alert you to a campaign of sorts I started here on the 'pedia. As you may know, Denver is bidding for the 2008 Democratic National Convention. Denver is my hometown, and I'm now rallying support to bring the DNC to the Mile-High City in 2008. I would greatly appreciate your support in this effort. You can post {{User:1ne/Userboxes/Denver2008}} to join, or just add [[Category:Wikipedians for Denver 2008]] to your user page. Anyhow, have a good one. Editor19841 01:59, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Great to have ya' aboard! With your help and the help of other Wikipedians in this effort, 2008 will be a year for Denver and Democrats. If you have any questions, comments, etc., drop by my talk page any time. And if you wish, you can help the effort by reaching out to Wikipedians who'd probably be interested in this type of campaign (just be sure to keep within the Wiki-law). Thanks again for your support! Have a good one. Editor19841 18:19, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Denver 2008 - the latest

How's it goin', Folksong? I'm dropping by the talk pages of Wikipedians for Denver 2008 today with an update on the bidding process and where Denver's bid is currently at.

First off, Denver has a new, unofficial bid homepage up today: http://www.denverdnc2008.com/ , which you may want to check out for more info on the bid to bring the DNC to the Mile High City in '08.

Second, today the site-selection committee is expected to announce the final two cities in the bid for 2008. It's expected by most pundits and bloggers that Denver and St. Paul will likely be the two finalists, but many think that dark horse New York may edge out a seat in the final days of the bidding process.

Third, we're expecting an official site for Denver's bid to emerge within days from the mind of Colorado Democratic Party V.C. Dan Slater (founder and operator of the popular Colorado blog Demonotes).

Well, that's the basics of the day-after-Labor Day DNC update, from a dem from Denver (that'd be me). If your looking for more info on the process that this is all about, check out the premier blog for doing so, http://demconwatch.blogspot.com (a link is on my page: links section for both this blog, Demnotes, and Denver 2008). If you’re looking for more info on the Democratic Party straight from the donkey's mouth check out http://www.democrats.org the official site of the Democratic National Committee.

Anyhow, have a good one. Editor19841 (talk) 23:30, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bonnie Garcia tweaks

Thanks for watching my back on that. I kinda sorta slapdashed the article together in hopes of cleaning it up because of the current event. I'm glad to see someone else jumping into the fray.  :)) Take care, Lucky 6.9 20:24, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

  • Might be fun. I was thinking of doing one about state senator Jim Battin next. Sonny Bono's former mayoral campaign manager is a friend of mine, but he's completely unknown outside Palm Springs. I'd put a mention of him in the Sonny Bono article a long time ago. Also thinking of doing one on mayor Ron Oden of Palm Springs if he doesn't already have an article. Not many openly gay, African-American mayors of whom I'm aware. I've met Ron a couple of times. Helluva nice guy. Ditto Jim and his staff. - Lucky 6.9 00:14, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] "Ethnic backgrounds"

What it comes down to with these is that half of the time, they are either 1. Wrong, because the user got them from a bad source, 2. Simply based on last names, like probably half of the people named "O ' " something in the Irish-American category. Then after Wikipedia has this info, all the silly web sites out there copy it, and then after I delete it from the Wikipedia article as unsourced, someone adds one of those sites as a source! (And that's a great way of creating a "source") Oh, and don't get me started on when the article has a (correct/sourced) mention that someone is, say, "of German, Irish, French, Dutch and Welsh ancestry", and then some trigger happy user immediately adds every one of the 5 categories, in what can only be called a gross misinterpretation of what the term "X-American" is and who it is applied to. For all the reasons mentioned above, this issue has gone out of control on Wikipedia, and needs to be reigned in. I have nothing against mentioning ethnic background in the article, as long as it is properly sourced; nor do I have anything against putting a category in, as long as the source actually says the person in question is X-American, rather than their great-grandmother. That's really all I can say. Mad Jack 17:27, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

By the way, what have we had a "conflict" over before? I don't remember. As for "conflicts" in general on Wikipedia, I simply don't believe in their existance. Either a user has a source for their claim, in which case they are right, or they don't have a source, in which case they are simply wrong. So, for example, that Higgins article should have stated that he is of Irish, German and Portuguese descent with the source (which I've just added into the article) rather than have the three categories there and leave us guessing why they are there. As for the categories, I've removed them because I couldn't find a source that described him as either Irish-American, German-American or Portuguese-American, only that he has some ancestry of each, which does not an "X-American" make (and please, for the love of all that is good, don't triumphantly cite me a definition of "Irish American" as an "American of Irish descent"; first of all, the definition is indeed "of Irish descent", not of "Irish, German, Welsh, Greek, etc descent", and second, Wiki users can't use a popular definition to decide who is a what anyway, just go by what the source says specifically on the person). If there's a source out there that, say, calls him a Portuguese-American you should certainly re-instate that. Mad Jack 17:47, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
Jack, your view on conflicts seems to reinforce my suspicion of a somewhat vigilante-style editing pattern in the section and an unwillingness to compromise or assume good faith on other's edits. It's about compromise and reason, not trying to fight over who's right or not. I remember clashing in the past in an edit war regarding to the Marty Schottenheimer article, he referred to himself as an "old German" once and he's from Pennsylvania, which makes him a German-American. Since you weren't able to find the source I did, does that mean that it's automatically wrong and that it should be reverted? I'm not new to Wikipedia either, I've been here for three years under different names (edited horribly controversial topics) and a long stint as an anon editor, and if you would have liked me to provide my source, I wouldn't mind if you'd ask me and perhaps I could dig on Google or explain why I added that.[1] And another time was the John Engler article, I read from a non-Wiki online source that he was of German and Austrian descent (his parents were), just because I can't find it again, does it mean that it's automatically wrong? It seems that both of us have quite conflicting views on the matter and I'll take a break for a while and see if I can speak to an advocate later this week. All the best, --Folksong 00:41, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
If he referred to himself as an "old German" that would be a reliable source. "Advocate"? What do you mean? I'm afraid I haven't exactly interpreted myself as being in any conflict with you. In our Wikipedia history, I've made two edits that you didn't like. For both, the eventual result is something I am pleased with and that fits in with Wiki's policies. The bottom line is that if the info has a source, it certainly can be in the article. I don't think you disagree with that. By the way, an "edit war" does not consist of a person removing a piece of info because it's not in the article and is unsourced, and then being reverted by a person who adds a source into the article. We've certainly never been in anything that anybody could call an "edit war". And no, it doesn't mean something is wrong if it doesn't have a source, it just means it can't be in an article until it is sourced (and of course, off-line sources are certainly acceptable).Mad Jack 04:26, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks for the Star

Thanks for the star. I am still putting one or two images for numerous groups into the public doamain here and expect I will for quite some time. It is a win-win, getting excellent images out for the performers' fans and at the same time a little PR for me and the casino. Since I am already paid for shooting and can't sell the images as I do not have a model release, but believe this use is permitted, everyone benefits. Thanks for taking the time to notice. Thanks for uploading Image:MegaCruiser.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. Thanks for uploading Image:Giuliani Alan4.jpg. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not.
