Fogo (town), Newfoundland and Labrador
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fogo is a Canadian town on Fogo Island in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The largest community on the island, the town is also the location of the island's first permanent settlement, which took place in the early 1700s, although an English settlement may have also been in place as early as 1680. The town is situated on Fogor Harbour, along the island's south shore which faces the island of Newfoundland.
The town's economy is tied to the fishing industry and it was home to several fish merchants. During the 1890s, the town began to receive regular coastal ferry service from the Newfoundland Railway (the Canadian National Railways after Newfoundland entered Confederation in 1949).
