Franklin "Foggy" Nelson is a comic book character in the Marvel Comics universe, part of the supporting cast of Daredevil (Matt Murdock); Foggy is Matt's best friend. The character was created by Stan Lee and Bill Everett.
Once used only for comic relief, Foggy has developed into one of the strongest supporting characters in the Marvel Universe. He shares a very deep friendship with Matt Murdock, being both his sidekick and his protector. With his down-to-earth, everyman lifestyle, he acts as a contrast to his tormented superhero colleague.
Foggy is always portrayed as a slightly obese man who obviously spends a lot of time behind a desk. However, time and again, he has proven to be almost as good a lawyer than Murdock and tried numerous cases which bear that out.
[edit] History
Foggy was Matt Murdock's roommate while they were studying at Columbia Law School. Matt protected Foggy against bullies and helped him study. When Matt began dating Elektra Natchios, Foggy disapproved, because he thought she was dangerous (which turned out to be a correct assessment). After Elektra left the university, Matt and Foggy transferred to Harvard Law School. After graduating, Matt and Foggy opened up a private law practice. They hired a secretary, Karen Page, with whom both Matt and Foggy fell in love. Sadly, Karen's life would turn to tragedy years later.
Several years later, Elektra was hired by the Kingpin to assassinate Foggy. However, upon confronting Foggy, he recognized her as "Matt's girl". Unable to kill Foggy after this, Elektra abandoned her assignment, which led to her (temporary) death at the hands of Bullseye.
Despite this and many other tragedies in Matt's life, Foggy has been a loyal and true friend. He recently was in a relationship with Liz Allan, but the villain Mysterio manipulated Foggy into having an affair with another woman and then killing her when she appeared to be a monster. This led Liz to break up with him.
Recently, Matt was outed as Daredevil by the media and was eventually arrested. After Foggy went to visit Matt in prison with private investigator Dakota North, he was stabbed and seriously injured by several inmates. Matt heard his friend's heartbeat slowly cease, and Foggy was declared dead sometime after the ambulance took him away. Murdock later attended Foggy's funeral only for Foggy's grieving mother Rosalind Sharpe to blame him for what happened to her son.
Later it was revealed that Foggy Nelson had not actually died at all, but was rather placed in witness protection program where he is recovering from his wounds and beginning to assume a new identity. He attempted to escape in an effort to reunite with Matt, only to be captured by the mafia, who in turn were slaughtered by ninjas of the Hand. They returned him to his former captors, after informing him that they would be watching.
[edit] Alternate versions
In the alternate future known as MC2, Foggy Nelson married Liz Allan and is the stepfather to Norman "Normie" Osborn III. He has outlived Murdock, who has been murdered.
At one point, Foggy is shown to be acting as counsel to Wilson Fisk, but he recuses himself as Fisk's attorney when he learns that Fisk was responsible for Murdock's death.
Foggy also outlived Liz, who died of a fatal illness (of a non-specified nature). After his wife's death, he buried himself in his work and he blamed himself when Normie, went temporarily insane. After Normie reformed, the two finally bonded.
When Normie got engaged to the Vulture (II)'s daughter, Foggy did not really approve of the arrangement--and Foggy again felt guilty when Normie is once again temporarily transformed into a supervillain.
In the Ultimate universe, Foggy is Matthew Murdock's college roommate. Recently, in Ultimate Spider-Man Annual #2, an adult Foggy Nelson talks with Spider-Man.
In Neil Gaiman's 1602, Foggy is a seaship captain who regularly ferries the Daredevil of 1602, whom he is suspicious of, across the English Channel.
[edit] Other media
In the 2003 Daredevil movie, Foggy is played by Jon Favreau. The character's background and relationship with Matt Murdock are faithful to the comics, but differ in relation to Elektra, Bullseye etc. The Director's Cut DVD version includes many additional scenes rounding out the two characters and their friendship.
