[edit] Plot summary

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Over a year after Septimus Heap had discovered his real identity, he is now Apprentice to the ExtraOrdinary Wizard, Marcia Overstrand. His brother Simon has disappeared for a year, and his remaining brothers have run off to the Forest. Meanwhile, Marcia is stalked by a Shadow, Alther Mellar has enrolled ghosts as guards of the Palace, and Jenna is preparing to leave for her Mid-Summers Eve visit to Aunt Zelda's. Suddenly Simon returns and kidnaps Jenna taking her away on his horse. He reveals his secret--he is Apprentice to DomDaniel, and they plan to Restore DomDaniel, and overthrow Marcia and Septimus, so that they can replace them. Septimus sets off to find Jenna, only to get lost in the Forest with Nicko, his brother and guide. They encounter their now tree-shaped shape-shifter Grandpa Benji, who saves them from a pack of wolverines. Jenna escapes from Simon at the dead of night by turning her cell door into chocolate and escaping on his horse. Meanwhile, Septimus and Nicko have encountered Wolf Boy and the Witch Mother. The Witch Mother tells them to head to the port, which they do, along the way discovering that Wolf Boy is also Boy 409 from the Young Army, Septimus' best friend when Septimus was in the Young Army himself. They rendezvous in the Port, with Jenna. Unfortuanately, Simon has sent Sleuth, his enchanted tennis ball, to tag Jenna, and Sleuth eventually does so in the middle of the night during their stay in the Port. Finally, they begin their journey Aunt Zelda's house for the Queen (or in this case, the Queenling)'s annual Midsummer visit to the Dragon Boat. While waiting for the boggart to lead them to Draggen Island (where Aunt Zelda lives), Simon tracks them there with the Flyte charm, an ancient charm that was supposedly destroyed. Fortuanately, in the ensuing battle, Wolf Boy hits Simon's left eye with a rock from his sling, and Simon flees. They make it to Draggen Island, but all does not remain well. A rock Septimus brought with him turns out to be a dragon egg and hatches and the dragon imprints on Septimus, who names the dragon Spit Fyre. Wolf Boy, who was burnt when Sleuth tagged Jenna, develops a fever. When Simon shows up, Nicko, Jenna, and Septimus flee on the flying Dragon Boat, leaving Wolf Boy behind. Just before leaving, Aunt Zelda gives Jenna a special key. There is a small battle between the Dragon Boat and Simon, during which the Dragon's wing is punctured by a Thunderflash, Simon gets smacked head over heels by the Dragon's tail, and afterwards Zelda uses a Cloud Concentrate potion to keep the injured Dragon Boat and it's "crew" from crashing into the marsh. After landing in the water there is an uneventful trip to the dock. Simon is captured, and Septimus takes Simon's Flyte Charm, and his own Flyte Charm, and they merge together to create the one true Flyte Charm. Before this, Simon manages to escape. The Dragon rests in a secret Dragon dock or cove or the like, Nicko stays with the boatbuilder to help fix the Dragon Boat, Septimus returns to the tower with Spit Fyre, and Jenna returns to the magnifecent Palace.

[edit] The Heaps (In arrangement from oldest to youngest)

  • Grandpa Benji: He is Silas's father. Grandpa Benji lives in the Forest. He was a shape shifter, and turned himself into a tree. He helped out Nicko and Septimus when they were in trouble from some wolverines.
  • Silas Heap: The Father of the family. He found Jenna in the snow the day Septimus was born. Although Silas was a seventh son, he didn't possess much talent, and is merely a humble Ordinary Wizard.
  • Sarah Heap: The mother of the family. Sarah is quite emotional, and insists on hugging Simon and fondling him when he gets back. On the other hand, she could be quite formidable when she or her family is insulted or threatened in any way, or just to get what she believes in.

Simon offered to Restore DomDaniel, the old ExtraOrdinary Wizard, if he took him on as an Apprentice. He was quite nasty to his brothers and adoptive sister, and kidnapped Jenna.

  • Edd Heap: He and Erik are twins. They like to play practical jokes.
  • Erik Heap: Edd's twin.

  • Septimus Heap: The protagonist of the series. Originally Boy 412 in the Young Army. The seventh son of a seventh son. He is Marcia's Apprentice. He and Jenna have a close relationship.
