Floyd Thomson

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Floyd Thomson (born 1949) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player.

Left-winger Floyd Thomson played over 400 NHL games for the St. Louis Blues in the 1970s. He was a clever offensive player who was effective on faceoffs and could stand his ground in the corners or the slot.

Born in Sudbury, Ontario, Thomson played his amateur hockey in the NOHA with Falconbridge-Garson. Undrafted and unsigned, he played his first pro season with the IHL's Fort Wayne Komets in 1969-70. After signing as a free agent with the St. Louis Blues in October 1970, Thomson played a regular shift on the CHL's Kansas City Blues in 1970-71.

Thomson went through the usual growing pains as an NHL rookie in 1971-72 and spent a bit more time in the minors. Beginning in 1972-73, he spent five years as a playmaker and penalty killer in St. Louis. He set a personal-high 36 points in 1974-75 playing on a line with Wayne Merrick and Pierre Plante.

By the late '70s, he lost his full-time role with the Blues and was a CHL regular. After scoring 41 goals for the Salt Lake Golden Eagles in 1978-79, he was placed on the league's first all-star team. Thomson retired in 1982 after playing most of his last five pro seasons with Salt Lake.
