Florida State Road 514

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

State Road 514, also known as Malabar Road, is an east-west highway that serves Palm Bay and Malabar, Florida. It is the only east-west Brevard County major road to be in the 27th and 28th degrees lattitude. It is the dividing line between north and south Palm Bay. The Palm Bay Police Department refers to it as the "Boulevard". It is 10 miles long. Most of the road is only 2 lanes wide. Between the town limits of Malabar and U.S. Route 1, the speed limit is 55 with 2 lanes. Both the city halls of Palm Bay and Malabar are located on this road. At western Palm Bay (west of CR 509), the road is 2 lanes wide, with a speed limit of 45 because there isn't much business' on this portion. West of Palm Bay Regional Park, the road becomes a dirt road and the road exit's Palm Bay. It passes the Indian Fields. For 1 and a half miles, the roads remains unpaved. It then turns to a north-south road, and then the road is no longer a dirt road. For 1 mile, it is paved until it hits a parking lot. That parking lot is the true western terminus of Malabar Road.

There is a proposed causeway over the Indian River Lagoon east of U.S. Route 1, extending the state road for 2 miles. The road might be too close to the lagoon. If it was built, it would be 12 miles long. Because of a condominium community on the barrier island, it would steer away from it and head directly east-west to Florida State Road A1A. The road remains 2 lanes wide because Florida State Road A1A is also 2 lanes wide.
