FLORIDA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA, which grew out of the Ft. Lauderdale Symphony originally founded in the 1949, performed at various venues in the south Florida area (including Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties) until its bankruptcy in May of 2003. British conductor James Judd served as Music Director for a 14-year period which ended in 2002 and Peter Nero was the principal conductor for the orchestra's “Pops at the Philharmonic” series. The orchestra also presented educational programs to more than 50,000 children annually and performed as the pit orchestra for the Florida Grand Opera's productions. Their recording of Mahler’s First Symphony earned high praise from several national recording publications, was named “recording of the Month” from Stereophile, was awarded the Gold Medal from Frances’ DIAPASON, and also won one of the most prestigious prizes in the classical recording industry, the award from the Gustav Mahler Society (of Germany) for the best new Mahler recording of 1994.
