Flixton, Greater Manchester

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Flixton, is a locality in the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford, in Greater Manchester, England.

The name Flixton is now taken to mean the original village and the surrounding suburban area. It is situated to the south west of the district of Urmston. Historically, Flixton was a more important site than its neighbour Urmston.[citation needed] However, the building of the railway through Urmston and Flixton in 1872 saw an increase in population and the growth of Urmston town centre. Urmston is now the main centre and some people consider Flixton to be part of Urmston, although this is cause of disgreement amongst locals, much the same as Davyhulme[citation needed].

The River Mersey forms the southern boundary of Flixton and the Manchester Ship Canal (formerly the path of the River Irwell), the western boundary. The Liverpool to Manchester train line runs through Flixton along the former Cheshire Lines Committee line and a boarding and alighting station is situated in Flixton village on Flixton Road.

Golf courses in Flixton include the William Wroe golf course which is municipal and run on behalf of Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council and the Flixton Golf Club which is private and the longest nine hole golf course in England. Urmston Leisure Centre is also located in Flixton and includes a swimming pool. Secondary schools are the single-sex Flixton Girls High School on Flixton Road, and the single-sex (male) Wellacre Technology & Vocational College on Irlam Road. None of these two have sixth forms. Sixth forms are at the grammar schools in Urmston. The large Trafford General Hospital is on Moorside Road on the eastern edge of Flixton.

Flixton House is in Flixton. Local pubs are the Fox & Hounds on Woodsend Road, the Railway Tavern on Irlam Road, and the Red Lion Hotel on Irlam Road.
