Flip (Little Nemo)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Flip is a character in the comic strip Little Nemo in Slumberland. He is the son of the Sun, and the nephew of the Dawn, but he is something of a ne'er-do-well, and is more or less an outcast. In his earliest appearances, he spends his time in Slumberland (whose residents don't want anything to do with him), vying with Nemo for the Princess' attentions, unafraid to play dirty. Eventually he passes from nemesis to tolerated companion to close friend of Nemo's and becomes one of the strip's livelier, more charming characters.

He is shown as a cigar-smoking, green-faced dwarf, but it is unclear whether he is a small adult or a child; Nemo refers to Flip as a "boy" on several occasions, but in episodes published in 1908 and 1913 Flip claims to be 23 years old. (It is wise, however, to take anything that Flip says with a grain of salt.)

Separately or together, Flip and The Imp would provide much of the strip's comic relief. Another recurring character was Doctor Pill, a quack with whom Flip was always arguing.

[edit] Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland (film)

In the movie Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland, Flip is portrayed as a mischief maker, much like in the comics. He is not really seen as an enemy toward Nemo but isn't liked by most of Slumberland. Though maybe not seen as an enemy, he is portrayed as more of a bad influence toward Nemo which eventually ends up with Flip influencing Nemo to opening the forbidden door which releases the Nightmare King. Though he did not know what was behind the forbidden door, Flip corrects his wrong doing by joining Nemo in a rescue attempt to get King Morpheus back from Nightmare Land and by helping Nemo and the group find Nightmare Land with a special map of his. He is last seen in the movie on his giant flying crow Flap, saying good-bye to Nemo and the Princess as they depart Slumberland in the King's dirigible.
