Flintridge Preparatory School

Flintridge Preparatory School, familiarily known as Prep, is a nonprofit, independent college preparatory day school for grades 7-12. Founded in 1933, it is located within the city limits of La Canada Flintridge, California, at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. The school's mascot is the Rebel. Its academic and athletic rival is Polytechnic School in Pasadena, California

[edit] Facilities

School facilities include a science/cultural center, three classroom buildings, a computer laboratory, a technology-based library, a performing arts center, a 400-seat auditorium, an administration building with faculty offices, and an alumni and development office building.

Construction is currently under way for a new two-story library and learning center, which will include a computer lab, a classroom for seminars, meeting rooms, space for individual and group study, and a college counseling suite. The new construction, scheduled for completion in the fall of 2007, will also expand and improve the school's food service facilities.

Athletic facilities include a full-size gymnasium, a six-lane swimming and diving pool, a small multi-sport playing field, a fully equipped weight training facility and a professional training room for injury prevention and rehabilitation.

Flintridge Prep is a charter member of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and is accredited for a six-year term. It holds memberships in the California Association of Independent Schools, the National Association of Independent Schools, the Western Association of College Counselors, the Cum Laude Society, and the Educational Records Bureau. Flintridge complies with the National Association for College Admission Counseling's Statement of Principles of Good Practice. It also participates in the American Field Service and The Independent School Alliance for Minority Affairs.

Approx. 500 students in grades 7 through 12, 100 seniors.

7% African-American; 7% Hispanic; 24% Asian-American; 62% Caucasian

54 full-time faculty; 6 part-time faculty. All have BA/BS degrees; 31 have masters and 7 have doctoral degrees.

[edit] Grades/rank

Semester system, four grading periods per year with grades recorded at the end of each course. A year course yields 1 credit in that subject. Students normally take 5 credits each year. Class periods are 43 minutes long and meet 5 times per week. Physical education is required through the sophomore year. Students are not ranked. GPA is based on all course work except PE; the school unweighted average is 3.90. Grading consists of A – excellent; B – good; C – adequate; D – serious difficulty; F – unwilling to make an effort to progress. C grades and above are college recommending. D is passing.

4 years of English; 3 of math; 3 of foreign language; 3 of history; 2 of lab science; and 1.5 credit of fine arts is required. Community service is required at each grade level.
