FlightLinux

FlightLinux was a real-time operating system designed specifically for embedded control computers in spacecraft.

FlightLinux was intended to be flown on the UoSAT-12 satellite, built by Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd, but that was not done. FlightLinux has never flown in space. An interview with Pat Stakem, leader of the FlightLinux project recounts: "Our FlightLinux Project concluded on June 30, 2002. We did not have sufficient time to complete the planned flight demonstration."[1]

FlightLinux was adapted from existing Linux distributions and customized for its specific function. The source code for the FlightLinux distribution is not publicly available. Export restrictions on satellite control software (the US International Traffic in Arms Regulations or ITAR) restrict free dissemination of such software without a license. One may be able to infer which features are needed, not used and augmented, by looking at the host distribution of a variant of real time Linux; FlightLinux had adopted ELKS.
