[edit] Summary

This is an original drawing by User:Dystopos of the Flag of Birmingham, Alabama based on the diagram and specifications given in American City Flags by John M. Purcell, with James A. Croft and Rich Monahan. (2003) Raven: A Journal of Vexillology (North American Vexillological Association) Vol. 9/10. and the photograph and explanation in Birmingham's First Magic Century, Were You There? by Bertha Bendall Norton. (Birmingham: Lakeshore Press, 1970).

[edit] Notes

  1. The flag design specifies the use of the official seal with the date "1871" added in the perimeter. I do not know the history of Birmingham's seal. For the drawing I have added the date to the seal in current use, which is similar to those depicted in my references.
  2. NAVA specifies 85 rays. The photograph in Norton's book shows 67, one for each small star. I am showing 85.
  3. The colors are "white, red and gold", the specifics for which are open to interpretation depending on the pigments, dyes or pixels at hand.
  4. The proportions are 10:19, the same as the Flag of the United States. The photograph in Norton's book appears to show a much shorter fly, with the red bars narrowed.
