Flat Rock, Michigan

Flat Rock is a city in Wayne County of the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 8,488. Flat Rock is home to the AutoAlliance International manufacturing plant, co-owned by Ford Motor Company and Mazda Motor Corporation. As of 2005 it produces the Mazda Mazda6 and the 2005 Ford Mustang. Also, Flat Rock is home to the famous Flat Rock Speedway.

Flat Rock is the birthplace of actor Dann Florek, best known for his roles in the TV series L.A. Law, and Law & Order.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 17.6 km² (6.8 mi²). 17.4 km² (6.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (1.47%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 8,488 people, 3,181 households, and 2,306 families residing in the city. The population density was 489.1/km² (1,266.9/mi²). There were 3,291 housing units at an average density of 189.7/km² (491.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.32% White, 1.43% African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.64% from other races, and 1.65% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.70% of the population.

There were 3,181 households out of which 39.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% were married couples living together, 16.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% were non-families. 22.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.12.

In the city the population was spread out with 29.3% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 9.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $44,084, and the median income for a family was $54,186. Males had a median income of $43,967 versus $27,348 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,256. About 8.5% of families and 8.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.3% of those under age 18 and 4.8% of those age 65 or over.

In the last 10 years Flat Rock has grown from a sleepy suburb on the fringes of Wayne County to a booming development area. Property values have substantially increased and population in the next census is expected to increase at least 20%. New construction since 2000:
