"Flash boiler" can mean a very simple type of boiler found in pop-pop boats, which see.

"Flash boiler" can mean a type of fire-tube boiler, whose fire tubes are strong and close together with very little water space between, kept nearly red hot so the water trickles in drop by drop and is immediately flashed into steam and superheated. They have these advantages:-

  • Less weight and bulk.
  • Less time to raise steam from cold.

But a flash boiler is much easier than an ordinary boiler to overheat until heat affects the metal.
