The flag of Azerbaijan consists of three equal horizontal bands of blue (top), red, and green; a white crescent and an eight-pointed star (۞ Rub El Hizb) are centered in the red band. The eight points of the star stand for the eight branches of the Turkic people. The blue band is the color of the Turks, the green is for Islam and red is for progress. The official colours and size were adopted on 5 February 1991. An earlier variation of this flag was used by the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR). The flag of the ADR featured a much larger crescent which was placed on the left of the flag rather than in the center. This flag was used until Azerbaijan was incorporated into the USSR as the Azerbaijan SSR and a new Soviet flag was adopted.
