[edit] Emperor Gum Moth

Hey there Fir, better late than never I'd say, good work on finding the correct name and title of that moth. Unforunately it is not possible to move image pages, they have to be uploaded again, and all links need to be updated. I have downloaded and uploaded the renamed image, updated the description page as well. The next step was tracking all pages linking to the original image, if you look at the bottom of the original image page, you see the "what links here" section. I have used that as a starting point to update the links, which were all over the place. The only think left for you to do would be updating the entry in the POTD archive, it could use an appropriate text about this moth. Maybe you can even write a stub article on the Emperor Gum Moth? Keep up the great work, -- Solitude\talk 11:49, Oct 26, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Your question

Hey there, when you edit an article, the box below the large editing box can be used to enter a description of your edit. This is useful for people looking through the history of an article, as it makes it easy to see with a glance what has happened to the document over the last 20 edits or so. I don't know of any particular tricks I guess, but there's alot of Wikipedia to explore and to find out, and then there is meta.wikipedia.org as well. You'll find out how it all works in time, just by using stuff and looking things up in the Help. Cheers, Solitude\talk 10:31, Nov 11, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Nice pics, but . . .

Can you get some more info for some of them? - I'm thinking particularly of your yellow rose (what cultivar?) and cactus flowers (what species?). With more information, they would be very useful indeed, as are e.g. your boxthorn pics which I have used to start a new article on the genus. Thanks, MPF 11:40, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Hi, you've nice pictures of some gum trees, it would be helpful if you could include some more info such as the location of the pictures (nearest towns, roads, hills etc., area) and type of gum trees. The info would be useful so that articles may be linked. Cheers!

[edit] Problem?

Hey there, first of all, you can't really break something by deleting it on Wikipedia, so don't worry. On what page did it go wrong? If you want to try to fix it, press "history" on the top of the page, click on the date of the version of the page you think is correct, then press edit and save. This is called reverting, for a full guide see here: Wikipedia:How to revert a page to an earlier version. Good luck, Solitude\talk 11:09, Nov 13, 2004 (UTC) PS. I'm not ad admin, luckily most editorial functions can be done by anyone, you too!

[edit] Insect eggs

Hi Fir,

Knowing that you are handy with the macro shot and seem to be able to find a range of small beasties in Australia, do you think you could find a cluster of insect eggs (under a leaf or wherever) to add to egg (biology) - it would help address the avian bias. -- Solipsist 16:55, 23 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Hi Solipsist, thanks for your comment, but I don't know whether I'll be able to help you out on that one. I know I must be getting a bit of a macro reputation, but truth be told, its mainly luck. I wouldn't be able to gaurentee finding any insect eggs in the next 6 months but on the other hand I might see one be accident and be able to take a photo of it. Most of my macro shots are like that For instance Cricket was taken on my water tank. Just happened to be their one day.
I do have a pretty average shot of ant eggs, but I don't think that's what you're after is it? Also my camera cant take photos of any object smaller than a 5c coin (Australian) very well. But I'll try my best. --Fir0002 01:17, 28 Nov 2004 (UTC)
No worries - there's no hurry. I don't know much about insect eggs, but I have seen them laid in clusters about the size of a small coin on the underside of leaves (sometimes the leaf is also folded and stuck together to protect the eggs). The ant eggs might be fine. I was really just thinking that example eggs from different animal families should be shown. Come to think of it, you might want to keep an eye out for an ostrich egg too - they are probably more common in Australia than the UK. Nice cricket by the way. :) -- Solipsist 12:24, 28 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Game of Life

[edit] Emperor Gum Moth

Hi Fir, thanks for your latest nomination on WP:FPC - nice shot. But I think it would be better if you choose just one picture to nominate. It rather distorts the voting process to nominate multiple pictures, and significantly complicates the final tally. -- Solipsist 08:17, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your comments Solipsist. I can see your point of view, its just that in the previous times I have submitted multiple but similar images for featuring, I have found that more often than not, the photo I would have chosen to feature aren't what other people think should be featured. The latest example being the Australian Garden Orb Weaver Spider. I personally would have chosen the first image to feature, but people were in favor of the the third option. If you think it is too much of a problem having multiple images, I'll rectify the problem. --Fir0002 01:54, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Interesting point. I guess the solution would be to set up a temporary gallery on a personal subpage (eg. User:Fir0002/FPCandidates) and ask a couple of trusted colleague to suggest which one should be nominated. -- Solipsist 00:02, 12 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Hi Fir - nice pic Image:Canary grass.jpg, I've identified it as Meadow Foxtail Alopecurus pratensis, a European grass naturalised worldwide in meadows. [edit] Unident pics

Hi Fir - thanks! The fruiting weed is Solanum pseudocapsicum, originally a native of Madeira and listed in my books as 'widely naturalised in subtropical areas'; it is also very commonly sold as an ornamental plant (including here in Britain, where it can be grown outdoors in mild areas but is mainly a house plant).

The flower, sorry, I don't know what it is. - MPF 11:04, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Commons?

I've noticed that you've been uploading pretty much all of your images to Wikipedia, rather than Wikimedia Commons. Please consider uploading them to the latter instead, since that is the method now recommended by Wikipedia, it avoids redundant image copies on different language servers, and provides an appropriate context for a large amount of pictures on the same topic (thus avoiding "additional photos" sections, such as the one in Blackberry). Oh, and great job with all the photos, keep it up! --Aramգուտանգ 12:28, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Is there any particular reason why Wikipedia is recommending uploading to the commons? And how exactly does it provide an appropriate context for a large amount of pictures on the same topic (do you have any examples?).
Do you think its a bad idea having "additional photos"?
When you insert an image from the commons to a page in the English Wikipedia, do you still use the "Image:Image.jpg|thumb]]" format?
The main reason I don't particularly want to change over to the commons is because when you click on an image you only see the image. To see the description you have to rederict to the commons page.
--Fir0002 23:54, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I guess the main reasons behind uploading images to Commons are so that they can be used in all language Wikipedias without any extra effort, and to provide a repository of images on a certain topic without cluttering the article. "Additional photo" sections can make the article look very cluttered and disrupt the flow or structure of an article. But when you have a link on a page that says "if you want to see a bunch of images on the topic, click here!", which is what the Commons link is intended to mean, it makes the context of the images clear, and also encourages people to add more photos, even if they are not better than the ones already there.
Inserting an image from Commmons in Wikipedia works in exactly the same way , you don't need to add or worry about anything.
To avoid the "see the image's description page on Commons" thing, which I find very annoying too, simply copy the text of the Image article on Commons (the one you see if you click "edit this page" on an Image page) to the Wikipedia article on the image (by clicking "edit this page" on the page that tells you to see Commons for the description). The reason behind this, is so that each language Wikipedia can create the image article on its server, with a translated caption/description in their language, without having to copy the actual image to their server. Hope this makes sense. --Aramգուտանգ 00:25, 25 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Tarantula

Hi Fir,

I was trying to set up the POTD for Image:Brachypelma edit.jpg, but it looks like we might have dropped the ball on this one — this pic doesn't seem to be illustrating any articles. Am I missing something - has the picture been removed from an article, or is it another version of the same image that is on an article? -- Solipsist 20:21, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Supply the "universal" repository with your tarantula picture?

Hi,

I would like to use your spider picture (the one you offered on the spider discussion page) on the Chinese language site. To do that easily it would be more convenient for me if you could upload it to the world-wide repositiory (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page). I would suggest that instead of giving it the filename Brachypelma edit.jpg you call it Brachypelma_sp.jpg. (Fortunately you did record the genus name correctly, and I can guess at the species name but it really doesn't matter. I would just like to introduce the Chinese readers to an attractive kind of tarantula.)

Thanks. P0M 01:01, 1 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Further info on eucalyptus pictures

Hi Fir0002, I wonder if you could add more information about the pictures used in the Eucalyptus article: Eucalyptus forest3 Eucalyptus forest and Eucalyptus tree.

The titles are a bit general so any other information you might have such as where the image was taken and the species of gum in the foreground would be most useful. Regards--AYArktos 23:50, 1 May 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for responding to my query with information about the pictures. I have updated the captions on the pictures with the extra information you gave me. I think it important for an encyclopaedia to identify to this level of detail. I do plan to review the pictures on the Eucalyptus page and the contribution they make to actually illustrating the article but I will do that through the article's talk page and not unilaterally. Regards--AYArktos 23:41, 2 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Commons

In response to User talk:Aramgutang#Commons photos

There doesn't appear to be a way to specify that an image comes from Commons, apparently the software first searches the current namespace, then Commons for the image. However, presumably the images you uploaded on Commons with the same name as on Wikipedia are indended to be a replacement for the Wiki versions, i.e. you want to move the Wiki version to Commons. Moving the images is a separate issue, and creates issues such as concerns over the lost image history. For a discussion of issues related to this, see Wikipedia talk:Moving images to the Commons, which appears to be inconclusive. You may also find the templates Template:NowCommons and Template:Deletebecauseoncommons of interest, although I'm not sure which one is best to use. You can also try asking an admin on Commons about such issues, as they're probably better informed on the status of various policies, discussions and debates. --Aramգուտանգ 18:13, 11 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Anvil

That's funny - just a couple of days ago I was looking for a better image for anvil (given that the current one is rather small and unsourced). Then, as if by magic, a better one appeared spontaneously. -- Solipsist 12:54, 12 May 2005 (UTC)

Fancy that! I've actually got another one which I haven't uploaded of only the anvil - no blacksmith, do you think it is worth uploading that one? --Fir0002 22:17, May 12, 2005 (UTC)
I quite like having the blacksmith in the shot. If the other anvil shot has more colour or shows more of the base and fixings it might be good to have it too, but it is fine as it is. -- Solipsist 10:00, 14 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Strucla

Hey, that's getting interesting! Unfortunately, I don't speak Polish. Do you? Is it possible that "strucla" literally means "braid" in Polish? Hm, probably not. Some more receipes: [1], [2], [3], and finally [4], describing a Czech (!) braided christmas cake that apparently also goes by the name "strucla" in some regions. Maybe "strucla" is just a generic (Polish?) term for a sweet yeast cake, irrespective of whether it is braided or not?

Of course I'd find the best link just after having saved this message. [5] would confirm my "generic term" theory. A Hefezopf could thus be categorized a a particularly simple subtype of what the Poles call strucla. Lupo 00:44, 13 May 2005 (UTC)

Oh, BTW, a Hefezopf also tapers off on one end. All the best, Lupo 00:41, 13 May 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the answer. See User talk:Lupo for a hint on "howka". Lupo 10:11, 14 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Fodder

I didn't remove a picture of a bull eating fodder. If I saw a picture like that, I would have left it because it would have illustrated the concept (stuff that farm animals eat). A picture of plants growing in a tray really doesn't illustrate much of anything. By the way, farmers have been growing fodder for their animals continuously from prehistoric times until today; it is hardly news to them as you argue.

No hard feelings, I hope. I just think that your picture didn't add to the article. I've seen some of your other pictures and they are VERY valuable contributions to the wiki. ike9898 14:08, May 16, 2005 (UTC)

Sure, that is reasonable enough. Maybe you should add some of what you told me to the article. Then, with a good caption, one of your pictures would make a lot of sense. See you around. ike9898 13:09, May 17, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image Tagging

From what I can see here, you're a great photographer, and the Wikipedia is graced with your presence. However,(you knew there had to be one :) ), another image of yours has been found without source information. We'd like to keep it, but you need to add more information about where it came from and the permission to use it here. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for tags you can use to correct this issue. My guess is that you took this picture yourself. If this is correct, can you add a GFDL tag to the page. That indicates you release it under the GFDL. You could also just have PD-self, which lets you release it into the public domain. For now, the image source is considered unverified. If you need help dealing with this problem, post to my talk page. Superm401 | Talk 19:05, May 22, 2005 (UTC)

My pleasure. You may not have noticed, but Blue Ant was the top entry on DYK on the Main Page last week too. Thanks for the excellent pictures - without them, I would not have written the page. -- ALoan (Talk) 09:32, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Flower pictures on the reference desk

Flower has now been identified as well » Wikipedia:Reference_desk_archive/June_2005#Identifying_Photos (Pincushion Hakea). ¦ Reisio 01:11, 2005 Jun 17 (UTC)

[edit] Image query

Have you got a picture of Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnatha) by any chance?--nixie 07:20, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thanks, I wanted the wattle for Australia to show that national flower, I've stuck a fair-use image in there for the time being--nixie 09:55, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Question

Hi fellow Victorian. I have a question for you but I was wanting to keep it private....You don't have an email address for wikipedians to email you. But if you don't mind, please email me and I'll reply with my question. Thanks, --Silversmith Hewwo 11:09, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Oh, and as for your "unknown pink flower" it's a Camellia japonica Pink Perfection. We have an article with your picture in it: Camellia --Silversmith Hewwo 11:29, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I don't know why my email didn't work. My contact details and other information about me is here: User:Silversmith/On Silversmith. Cheers, --Silversmith Hewwo 12:19, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Commons

Hi Fir, when you upload an image to Commons that is already on Wikipedia, could you please add the NowCommons template to the wikipedia version. An example of this is: your yellow rose pic. This makes life much easier for commons editors. Thanks, --Silversmith Hewwo 15:32, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Support and Oppose

Hi, Fir0002. I noticed you were using the nifty Support and Oppose templates that you created on WP:FPC. Some others have used it as well, and I was wondering if all votes should carry Support and Oppose tags from now on, or if it's just for personal use. :) Thanks, Sango123 13:26, Jun 20, 2005 (UTC)

One thing I like about the idea is that it could make it easier to count votes in a vote where there are lots of comments. On the other hand, they could be missused by those who change their votes and don't remove/change them. Perhaps in the future we could just have the template instead of writing the words, and if that is the case it would be very handy if the templates were quick and easy to write i.e S and O or something. --Silversmith Hewwo 13:48, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Sorry - I really don't like these: I can't see what they add above plain Support or Oppose. As you may have seen, I've listed them on Wikipedia:Templates for deletion. -- ALoan (Talk) 22:29, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Fir, I don't recommend changing to s and o as s is already taken by a letter:   and o could be in the future as well. But something else short like Sup and Opp or - and + could work. Just be careful that nothing has been taken is all. Cheers, --Silversmith Hewwo 11:41, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] WQ 3

Hello, Fir+ ! I'd appreciate your suggestion of some good panoramas (for header images) and other excellent images, perhaps with a spring theme, to illustrate the Gallery section of the latest Wikimedia Quarto. You might want to coordinate with Mats, who is working on some image selection as well. +sj + 17:28, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Formatting on TfD

Hi Fir0002,

Um, I think your vote on WP:TFD was missing a close tag somewhere; it really chewed up the formatting of the page. Could you re-add your vote on Template:Support, and check that the page looks okay? --TenOfAllTrades(talk) 22:14, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I restored your vote, but you'll want to add your signature (you can remove my remark above it, if you like.) --TenOfAllTrades(talk) 22:23, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Grasshopper

Well, I don't know why the photo gallery was removed. But I know that it was removed by the same unidentified user (24.250.29.179) that put them there. You can check it here (on 11 May). --Waninoco 11:18, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Vote

Hi. The "template for deletion" just breaks the flow, so I though I improve the layout. However, if you prefer it that way, no big problem, I'll just leave it alone. I also voted agains the templates, but this is not a high importance decision for me. Great chestnut pictures by the way! -- Chris 73 Talk

[edit] Picture taking tips

Hey! Congrats on the new barnstar to your collection! I have a question for you regarding how to use a camera. Could you take a look at this and suggest some things I can try to make them look better? I have no idea why the pictures come out like that. --HappyCamper 22:51, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] FPC templates

Since it looks like the support/oppose templates will be deleted (thanks to Wikipedia's policy to allow bad reasoning), I've copied them to my user page. You can do the same if you want. Whether you do or don't, please put this at the top of your user/talk page (replacing my name with yours if you copy them to your space):

= Support
= Oppose

Hi Fir,

You might also be interested in a note I left on Brian's talk page to actually measure any difference in server load. Although I would have to admit, at this point it is probably too late to get anyone to change their mind. -- Solipsist 15:11, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Put pix on Wiki Commmons?

Hi,

While looking around for more spider pictures I found one of yours. Would you please consider adding them to the Wikipedia Commons area so that people all over the world could easily put them in Wikipedias in other languages? I transferred some of my own pictures to the Chinese Wikipedia and they requested I move them to Commons. It's no harder to do, and the pictures appear with exactly the same markup language syntax on the English Wikipedia.

Once you get them to the Commons area you could put links to them on the English-language "spider gallery" (see the very bottom of the Spider article where I have made a link). That would make them easier for English speakers to find. You should be able to jump from some of the pictures there (the series of almost totally red spider for instance) to the Wikipedia Commons site. It's a different URL. Once you get there you can bookmark it. It's totally familiar since it's kind of a mirror of the English site.

Best,

P0M 18:55, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

You can go directly to 6 to see how I have organized things there. If you have uncategorized spiders you can just make a spot for "uncategorized" at the bottom of the page. P0M 02:50, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)
