First Federation

In the Star Trek Universe, the First Federation is a political and military organization first encountered by the United Federation of Planets (hereafter referred to as "UFP" to avoid confusion) in the 23rd Century.

The first encounter between the UFP and the First Federation occurred in 2266, when the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701), commanded by Capt. James T. Kirk, crossed into First Federation space and encountered tbe Fesarius, flagship of the First Federation. The encounter is the subject of the Star Trek: The Original Series episode The Corbomite Maneuver. Charged with violating First Federation territory, the Enterprise was threatened with destruction. After a series of bluffs and counter-bluffs, the Enterprise crew discovered the whole encounter was merely a test of the ship's intentions initiated by Balok, the Fesarius's captain. A cultural exchange was initiated, with an Enterprise crewman remaining aboard the Fesarius.

The First Federation is perhaps best known for tranya, a drink first served by Balok to the Enterprise crew who visited the Fesarius. Tranya is a major export of the First Federation and was served by Quark on DS9, thereby evidencing the existence of trade relations between the First Federation and other species in the 24th Century.

Very little else is known about the First Federation or its people(s). The only additional known reference is a small note on a very large star chart in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode Conspiracy, which appears to indicate that the First Federation is either surrounded by, or perhaps even a part of, the UFP.
