Fire On High is a haunting instrumental song with a disturbing intro by Electric Light Orchestra from their 1975 album Face the Music.
It contains a backward message in the beginning. When the song is played backwards, the message in a masked heavy voice can be heard stating, "The music is reversible but time is not. Turn back. Turn back. Turn back". Snippets of Handel's Messiah can be heard also.
The back cover of the record sleeve shows the members of the band with their faces pressed against a glass panel, supposedly watching the "electrocution" depicted on the front cover. The band member who is looking away is Richard Tandy, who is opposed to the death penalty and therefore didn't want to participate in the "joke."
A long-awaited remastered version was released by Sony Records on Sept. 11, 2006 as part of the Epic/legacy remaster series. Fire On High was used as the opening theme for the CBS Sports Spectacular TV show in the Mid-1970s.
A slightly edited version of Fire On High is used on a ride called the Astrosphere at Funtown USA in Saco, Maine. The ride is a scrambler inside of a vinyl dome held up by the air pressure inside, and as the ride goes there are lighting effects and strange random pictures projected onto the walls of the bubble while Fire on High is played extremely loud. A similar ride called GyroSphere at Seabreeze Amusement Park in Rochester, New York also used Fire on High in the early 1980s, but the music has changed since then. In 2000, The New Jersey Devils used, along with video clips, the song Fire On High in an opening ceremony to all its games.
