Fionnuala
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Irish mythology, Fionnuala (from 'fionn ghualainn' or fair-shouldered) was a daughter of Lir. In the legend of the Children of Lir, she was changed into a swan and cursed by her stepmother to wander the lakes and rivers of Ireland for 900 years. Her 7 brothers were changed into swans, and the only way to change them back was for her to knit them garments made out of a plant with thorns. She made 6 garments and the 7th was missing 1 sleeve, so the youngest brother was forced to live out his life as part human/part swan.
However, there is a more common version of the story, in which she has three brothers. See Children of Lir.
