Finnish phonotactics

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The phonotactics of the Finnish language natively permit syllables of form CVCC and CVVC at maximum, e.g. tors-tai, vaah-to. More importantly, a word must contain at least two voiced morae. [1] Particularly important is the distinction between long and short vowels. A speciality is /h/ in the syllable coda, irrespective of vowel length, e.g. pika "fast", pihka "resin", piika "maid", and as mentioned above, vaahto. Loans may include similar initial clusters as English, e.g. strutsi.
