Fingerplays

Fingerplays are rhymes for very young children. To engage and sustain children's interest, hand movements (hence the name fingerplay)for each fingerplay coordinate with the words. Fingerplays can be little songs or chants. Preschool teachers use fingerplays to focus the attention of young children and expand their interest and enjoyment of story books. One well know song fingerplay is the "Itsy Bitsy Spider". Fingerplays are a fun way of introducing poetry to children. Fingerplays are useful for practicing fine motor skills, following directions and introducing concepts.
