Fingernails is the first album released by Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty. It was released in the Summer of 1986, in tribute to Steven Dowden from Splendora, Texas. Although this album (actually a demo tape deemed worthy enough for release) went nearly unnoticed, interest in Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty and TexA.N.S., Keenan's other band, increased after Keenan became famous as the lead singer of Tool.

The demo was conceived and had most of its songs written by March 1986. After this, Keenan and Kevin Horning recorded the songs in Keenan's living room in Grand Rapids, Michigan, using a drum machine one some tracks. Following the completion and release of this demo, three more members were recruited so that the band could perform live. These members were: Todd Horning, Kevin's brother (second guitar), Stan Henderson (bass, occasional vocals), and Tom Geluso (drums).

Later, the band performed live at the Peace Day event on April 17, 1987 (by coincidence, also the date as Nirvana's first radio show and Keenan's 23rd birthday). This performance was videotaped and sold as a VHS tape. Copies of the tape are now very valuable and usually sell on eBay for upwards of $100.
