The Financial and Management Engineering Department is part of the Business School of the University of the Aegean in Greece. The FME Department was established in 2000 and it is located in the Aegean Island of Chios. The Department offers currently one undergraduate programme in financial and management engineering. The length of studies is 5 years (10 semesters).

[edit] Establisment

The Financial and Management Engineering Department is a new Department, established in 1999. The first students enrolled in the academic year 2000-2001. The aim is to train a new generation of specialized engineers capable to follow and adapt to the rapid developments of the information age. Carefully designed with a modern perspective, it offers a complete and dynamic Curriculum, based on the needs and demands of the new era, in order to equip the graduates a highly competitive degree. In July 2001, a special meeting was organized for the formation of the core of studies at the Department. In this meeting, renown scientists from the largest Universities of Greece and abroad, together with successful representatives of the business forum, contributed their knowledge and experience to the developing of the Department's Curriculum. A new meeting will be held on [date], again with the participation of representatives from relevant University Departments, in order to combine the new scientific knowledge available, together with the important experiences from the first three years of actual operation. The results of this meeting will be utilized for the enrichment and improvement of the Curriculum.

The Department's 5-year undergraduate curriculum is comprised of:

1.Main Courses

42 core program courses taught during the first three years of study to all tracks:
10 science courses (mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology)
6 engineering courses
7 economics and financial courses
9 management courses
5 information technology courses
3 social sciences courses
2 English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses

2. Seven compulsory track courses mainly taught during the fourth and fifth years of study,

relevant to a specialization area chosen by the student.

3. A choice of three out of ten elective courses allowing further specialization within the framework of the track. Three general electives selected from a group of enrichment courses

allowing for the development of creativity and skills essential to Financial and Management Engineers.

4. A final year project undertaken during the ninth and completed during the tenth semester.

The 55 aforementioned courses are selected from a total of 95 courses offered by the department. Finally, aspiring to be in the center of scientific progress and to meet the future needs of the market, internships are coordinated in order to provide professional experience in the relevant fields. The Department aims to provide students with strong foundations in engineering, management and finance. This integrated instructional approach equips students with a solid academic background and encourages the development of creativity essential to engineers in order to face the challenges of the new era of learning, rapid technological growth and economic globalization. The length of the studies is 5 years (10 semesters) minimum.
