Filosofem, the last Burzum album recorded before Varg Vikernes' imprisonment, came out under Misanthropy Records in early 1996. Its success was unprecedented for a Black metal album, getting into the indie charts in the UK and receiving great reviews from relatively mainstream music magazines. It was also a big success in Europe and Norway. A shortened version of the fifth track, Rundtgåing av Den Transcendentale Egenhetens Støtte, appeared on the soundtrack to the Harmony Korine film Gummo. The opening track, Dunkelheit, means darkness in German, hence it was originally named Burzum (meaning darkness in the Black Tongue of Mordor).
