[edit] History
The records are a bit sketchy, but we know Film Unit has been around since at least 1950, when it joined the BFFS[1], although it is likely the Film Unit society itself actually was formed before it joined the BFFS, and it is believed too that it pre-dates the BFFS.[citation needed] Film Unit also holds the copyright of a title shot in 1960, held in the University's achieves[2]. There is also a title shot in 1965 by "SUSU Film Society/Film Unit"
Film Unit used to show films in the Graves Building, part of the Union building. in 1996, a new auditorium was opened, which Film Unit moved into. This is the new home of Film Unit[3], and is also used as a lecture theatre.
Over the past, the members have been formed primarily from members of USIT, which folded in 2003.[4]. It now has a thriving committee, and is making in the region of £3-4,000 per year.
[edit] What is Film Unit
Film Unit is a professional quality independent cinema and Film society located deep within the University of Sheffield Union of Students and run entirely by volunteers, usually members of the University of Sheffield, although occasionally Alumni of the university (usually members of Film Unit as students) and Sheffield Hallam University students also make up committee and house staff. The cinema shows over 100 films a year. The usual programme is as follows:
- Wednesdays - foreign and arthouse films.
- Friday and Saturday flicks are typically recent mainstream hits, with the biggest blockbusters on the Saturday.
- Sundays are for old favourites, cult and classics.
It is classed within the Union as a Working Committee, as it provides a service to all students, and not merely its members (as a society does).
[edit] Entrance
Tickets are available for £1.80 from the Union Box Office. Tickets go on sale a week in advance, although you can buy tickets on the night. Anyone can buy tickets, but you need a U-Card or NUS card. For non-students, External Membership cards are available at the Union Reception for £1.
[edit] Children
As long as the film is suitable, children are welcome. However, some films may be preceded by adverts or trailers of a higher certificate than that of the feature presentation. Some matinées are classed as Child Friendly (CF) - these won’t have adverts and will only have trailers suitable to the certificate. Alternatively, one can just ask the House Manager on the night for advice on when it'll be safe to come in.
