Fiesta Week

Fiesta is a ten day festival in San Antonio, Texas marking Texan independence from Mexico. The ten day festival begins with the "Opening Ceremony" in front of the Alamo. The River Parade hosted by the Texas Cavaliers introduces King Antonio and other Fiesta royalty. The other two larger parades that make up the festival are the Battle of the Flowers Parade, second only in size to the "Rose Parade",of California. The court of the Order of The Alamo, who are sometimes Daughters of the Republic of Texas, the Texas equivalent of the Daughters of the American Revolution compose the royalty of the day parade,ie.,"Battle of Flowers Parade" and the Fiesta Flambeau one of Americas largest nightime parades features "Miss Fiesta". The local military Army, Navy, Air Force, and the Marine Corps have been partisipants for years. One of the most poular Fiesta events is a Night in Old San Antonio (NIOSA)held four nights.. This event is held downtown in la Villita (Spanish for little village). Another popular event is the Oyster Bake held on the grounds of St. Mary's University. In recient years a colerful and unfortunatly "UNOFFICIAL" group of Fiesta royals including King Anchovie, the Fiesta Hat King, and the Queen of the Pinatas have joined the fray. The almost ninety Fiesta events feature food,beverages,live music and sporting events. Fiesta has grown to become international in scope. Fiesta is every APRIL usually surrounding April 21st which marks San Jacinto Day the turn around date in the war of independence from Mexico.
