User:Fictional tool

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This username is an alternate account of User:Samsara.

Fictional tool is not a bot. Fictional tool does not exist. If it did, it would be a converter for converting bare web references like this:

into

<ref>{{cite web | url=http://www.google.com | title=Google | accessdate=1998-09-07}}</ref>

automatically retrieving the <title> header of the page and appending the current date set on the executing computer. Fictional tool's way of working would be somewhat similar to AWB, with a human operator checking the changes made.

If it were true that User:Samsara wrote such a tool, he might have set up an account like this to avoid artificially increasing his edit count.

Fictional tool did once exist, but it was called RefConvert2 or wikirefs2.pl, and it didn't have many friends, so it died.

[edit] Progress

Update 20/08/2006: The first test of the rewritten code looks good: [1]

Update 26/08/2006: Largest edit yet? [2] - sorry about the badly aligned diff. I don't write that code :)

But: One new known bug, in addition to problems supporting UTF-8... :-\

TODO: consider porting to PopUps

[edit] Requests

Please queue pages needing reference conversion below. I can't promise miracles immediately, but hopefully there will be enough interest that someone will be willing to help me port this baby to be more autonomous.
