FICON (Fiber Connectivity) is an FC4 Fibre Channel storage protocol . It is used in IBM mainframe computers and peripheral devices such as ECKD storage arrays and tape drives. It takes the ESCON channel protocol, and maps it onto a Fibre Channel transport. FICON supports the full-duplex data rates available in 1, 2 and 4 Gigabit fibre channel fabrics, and distances of up to 100 kilometers.
