[edit] Meisa Kuroki prod

Just as a note, the prod template doesn't allow for reasons to be given. MSJapan 17:54, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

Actually, it has a "concern=" part. Take a look at other nomination proposals and you'll see some examples. Fg2 20:56, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
Hm. I wish the template told me that. In any case, I expanded the article with some of the material from the Japanese WP entry, but I need someone who has seen her stuff to doublecheck the names. The ones I have aren't "wrong" per se, but they may not be what's actually used for the character in question. MSJapan 05:39, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
I can't be sure, but they look right to me. IMDB confirmed "Taitei no Ken." Although, Wikipedia:Manual of Style (Japan-related articles)#Body text #3 specifies "は, ヘ and を as particles are written wa, e, and o respectively." (Rather than "wo.")By the way, I think you've made a nice stub out of the article -- thanks! Fg2 06:14, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] I screwed up

The page was unfortunately on the articles page for the Shinto project. It has since been removed. Sorry for the screw-up. Badbilltucker 21:03, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Daishin-ji

Thanks! I cleaned out most of the kanji before, but, the article's creator added it back in last night. I see you decided to leave that last sentence alone, too. I think I'm about ready to have another shot at it.  :-) Neier 02:06, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Help

Hello. My favourite NHK tv series about Japanese rivers is back, so I will expand somewhat some Japanese river every week. This week it was Chikugo River. There is a nice GFDL photo on JA Wiki [1]. I would like to upload it here. Can you please translate the photo description? Thank you. :) - Darwinek 12:24, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi Darwinek, and thanks for your work on rivers!

The caption of the photo says something like this:

"Taken from the window of a train on the Kyūdai Main Line facing downstream (Chikugo Ōishi Station -- Yoake Station)

Ukiha, Fukuoka straddles the river on the left and in the background on the right; on the right foreground is Hita, Ōita

Taken in March 2006 by Bakkai"

Original text: 「久大本線車窓より下流方を望む(筑後大石駅~夜明駅) 川を挟んで左側と右側奥が福岡県うきは市、右側手前が大分県日田市 2006年3月 Bakkai撮影」

[edit] Kuma River

Hello again! Next and as I suppose (sadly) the last part of NHK river series was aired today. This time it was Kuma River. Can you please translate description of this [2] GFDL photo? Thank you very much. - Darwinek 20:30, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi Darwinek,

Thanks again for working on rivers. I hope NHK will broadcast some more shows for you! It sounds like an interesting series.

The caption of the photo says something like this:

The Kuma River near Shiroishi Station on the Hisatsu Line

[edit] Faculty

University faculties (Faculty of Business Studies, University of Dhaka, Faculty of Biological Science, University of Dhaka) cannot be notable as like as the university. Same thing happened with Dept. of Pharmacy, Jahangirnagar University. Why did you remove the tag? Tahnk you NAHID 09:14, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

As I wrote in the edit summary, there is a better solution. Instead of deleting, merge to form an article on academics. By the way, why do you say that faculties cannot be notable? Fg2 10:00, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
I read the edit summary. Then do you think should it be merged Dept. of Pharmacy, Jahangirnagar University or deleted....... NAHID 10:36, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
The information seems valuable. I don't see any harm in keeping separate articles, but merging them is fine too. Just for reference, take a look at University of Edinburgh#Colleges and Schools. Nine of their colleges and schools have individual articles. I believe Dhaka deserves coverage too, and either individual articles or a combined article seems fine. The article on Jahangirnagar Pharmacy is briefer and might best be merged until more comprehensive information is available. It can be separated at a later time if the article on the university becomes too long.
These are just my opinions. Please feel free to consult other people too in addition to your opinions.
Best regards, Fg2 11:17, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ulcinj Airport

Concerning Ulcinj Airport. I understand that minor does not equal none, my mistake, that however does not give a reason to remove the tag. Since my improper description seems to be the only reason, i reinstated the tag. If you wish for the article to be AFD'd, feel free to remove it again. - - 'twsx'talk'cont' 14:20, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

No reason is required and once a prod is removed it may not be restored. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 14:35, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] transmitters

I think merging the pages for them into collective articles as you suggested would be a very good idea. DGG 01:58, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. Lots of items are too minor for an individual article, although collections of them are. (And a nice thing about merging is that it can be done without a vote for deletion!). Fg2 03:47, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hi, and thank you

Thank you for your message on my talk page. I agree that that entry is unlikely to be deleted from Wikipedia. Thank you for removing the duplicate tag; the bot has been corrected to prevent that type of duplication.

[edit] Vincenzo Bianchini

Hi, I'd like to discuss further your removal of the Proposed deletion template on Vincenzo Bianchini. The reason you gave was "Google search for "Vincenzo Bianchini" -wiki (including the quotation marks) provides a few hundred matches, many relevant."

I'm confused how that, in and of itself, is any sort of demonstration of notability. You can do a search for my name and find more than 20,000 matches, just about all of them related to me and my professional work. That doesn't make me notable or worthy of an encyclopedia entry. See WP:NOTE. My suspicion, based on the username of the article's author, is that it was written by a relative of the person, perhaps in tribute.

But the issue, as I laid out in the deletion proposal, is not just about the worthiness of the subject for inclusion; it's about the gibberish that constitutes the content of the article. It's a machine translation of the Italian Wikipedia entry and makes no sense whatsoever.

If I could fix it, I might, but a) it's nonsense and b) I'm still not convinced of the notability of the subject. If anything, I'd say that the dearth of hits on a Google search is a mark against notability. Also, identifying that the person is possibly notable is not the same as saying that the article asserts that notability (which is required to avoid speedy deletion - see WP:CSD#A7).

I still believe that the article, as is, can't be saved. It would need to be written from scratch and I don't see that happening. Since the deletion is contested, I'll open up a full AfD and invite your comment there. Cheers. Planetneutral 01:33, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Please weigh in on the AfD debate. Thanks. Planetneutral 01:51, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
The points are worth looking into, and I had noticed the username of the article's author on the Italian Wikipedia. But that doesn't make the content automatically wrong or biased (although we might eventually conclude that it is), and if it's a machine translation it needs cleanup, not deletion. Calling it to the attention of a project concerned with Italy or fine arts might motivate someone to clean up the translation or verify that he merits an article. For comparison, take a look at another article before and after this edit. One editor described it as a "bunch of garble jarble nonsense" and another as a "botched translation" prior to my edit. After my edit, it looks like a Wikipedia article and has an English-language external link to support some of the information in it. I was able to do this without any knowledge of the Korean language. Someone with language skills and familiarity with the subject can surely do better. And it helps to have an article to start with. Also, I did not vote against deletion, even after cleaning up the article.
I looked at three or four of the articles Google found, and judged that the deletion of this article is controversial. Going through Articles for Deletion will get more people involved in the decision. Depending on the outcome of further investigation, I might vote either for or against deletion. Proposed Deletion is for articles that are not controversial. This article deserves broader scrutiny. Best regards, Fg2 02:02, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for your reasoned response. I see now that AfD was the way to go in the first place. I think my perspective was that the translation was so bad, that it was irreparable and therefore uncontroversial to delete. At some level, I still think that, but I'm interested in the translation cleanup template that you added and whether it will result in the clear assertion of notability that I'm seeking. I took the additional step of adding the page to Pages Needing Translation cleanup section, in the hopes of drawing the necessary attention. Planetneutral 04:10, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks to you for starting the whole thing off, and following it up. We both want the same thing: a better Wikipedia. Fg2 05:53, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Moving Pages

Hey, thanks for the message about moving pages. Thing is, I do not have this ability. I'm logged in, but there's simply no move button. I noticed at Help:Move it says that one's account might be too new. Perhaps this is the case, but when might that become available to me? Wikipedia is so decentralized, there's no one for me to ask this question to.BilabialBoxing 01:23, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

You're probably right about being too new. A quick peek at WP:MOVE didn't turn up anything, though, but I didn't look in detail. If you want to rename an article, I'll be glad to help, and for moves that require an administrator, you can find some at WikiProject:Japan (I'm not an administrator). Thanks again! [edit] Thanks

Thank you for helping with the Toshikazu Kase page which I started yesterday. I apologise for my ignorance, but I'm not quite sure how to give the name in kanji. Should it be '加瀬俊一' or '加瀬俊一 (1925年入省)'? In spite of my best efforts I can't figure out the significance of the inclusion of '1925', other than to guess that post that date the alternate script (?) was used. I'd be most grateful for your advice. Also, do you think that there is any material from the Japanese article that might enrich the English page? I'd like to see the photo included but don't know the protocol involved. I hope I'm not asking too much here! Again, many thanks. Armeria 12:51, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

I've looked again at your edit and plumped for '加瀬俊一 (1925年入省)', in an attempt to be bold! I'd still be happy to hear your views. Thanks, Armeria (talk)13:02, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Armeria, thanks again for writing that article! You picked a difficult example, as there were two people who wrote their names using exactly the same kanji and worked for the same department of the Japanese government. The Japanese Wikipedia article titles begin with the name, and distinguish the people by adding the year they entered government service. So 加瀬俊一 is the person's name and the part in parentheses is the additional information that the Japanese Wikipedia needs because it has articles on both people. Interestingly, although they used the same kanji, they pronounced their names differently, the other person being Kase Shun'ichi (or often Kase Shunichi). So the English Wikipedia will never have to add the information about the year they entered government service to distinguish them.
Now, to answer your question. The kanji for his name are 加瀬俊一. If you wish to indicate the kana, which the Japanese use to show pronunciation, it's かせ としかず. We usually don't put both kanji and kana in an article, but especially in a case like this there's no harm in it.
Thanks for asking! And if you have more questions, I'll be glad to help. Also feel free to ask at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Japan.
Best regards, Fg2 22:44, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
Thank you so much for the feedback, plus great explanation & advice. Could you please have a look at how I've rendered your suggestions - and edit as you see fit? I don't want to trespass on your goodwill, but I would really like help with both: i) the translation of any relevant material from the Japanese article, and ii) advice concerning the uploading of the photograph that appears there. As far as the translated material goes, it would be fine by me if a rough draft version were to be posted on say my talk page; I could then work on its presentation / wikification as a secondary task. If you think that I should make recourse to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Japan, then I shall do that. All best wishes, Armeria (talk) 00:54, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
I've started a very rough draft and hope to have more in a few days. Best Fg2 11:10, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
Great! Apologies for not having noticed this before now. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks again. All best, Armeria 17:51, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Japanese eye charts

Oh! Thank you for telling me. :) I had a feeling they might use the C charts... a chart like that with kanji on it would be awfully hard to read when you're short-sighted! ^^; --Candy-Panda 01:28, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Anatomy and physiology

  • Perhaps the content can be merged to cochlea, but the article itself should still be deleted; it's not a valid redirect. JuJube 03:55, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
    • No problem then. Once merged, it can be deleted or redirected to something else, if there's an article. Fg2 03:58, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Forcible relocation during Hideyoshi's Invasions of Korea

Thanks for providing a citation for that material, but since that article is in English, wouldn't it be better if the citation were given in romaji, not Japanese script? Also, as best as I can tell, the citation is only legible if you use the Edit this page link. Shouldn't it be legible from the article itself? Spventi 04:25, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi Spventi, Please accept my apologies. Apparently I don't know how to use the references (I thought it was correct). If you know how to fix it, please do. The editor's name is Takeuchi Rizō. The title is Nihonshi Shōjiten. The publisher is Kadokawa Shoten (Tokyo). I hope this helps. Fg2 04:38, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

No apologies necessary. I'm happy to have a reference for this, especially from a Japanese source, because it can be a contentious issue. Let me see if I can get the text to show up at the bottom of the page. Spventi 06:11, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Schola Gregoriana (Queen's University of Belfast)

Hello! I think your decision to move the Schola Gregoriana article to this page is a sensible one, however I am still unsure that the notability of the subject merits being merged into the Queen's University of Belfast article, as this is simply one small set of people within another student group (the Catholic Chaplaincy), with no apparent claim to notability other than the fact that they sing every Sunday (something which many, many choirs do). If there was an article on the Catholic Chaplaincy itself (although I'm not sure whether that would be considered notable), I would happily merge this content there, but as there is not, I am unsure whether there is anywhere for it to go, so I'm considering taking it to afd. Robotforaday 10:10, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi Robotforaday,

Of course you can ask for community consensus on deletion, and as you know many such articles are deleted. My preference would be to rename the article something like "Extracurricular activities at Queen's University of Belfast" or "Clubs and societies at ..." and make this the first entry in the hope that others would add information about theatre groups, orchestras, mountaineering activities, and other things that students do when they're not studying. I agree that there's nothing that makes this group stand out in particular, and I expect that many other groups would likewise be similar to their counterparts elsewhere (theatre groups perform; orchestras play; mountaineers climb) but I hope that collectively they're worth an article, as some other universities have. So this would be the seed of an article rather than an article on its own. Many Wikipedia articles begin small and change focus and direction as people add to them. It's easier to add to an existing article than to create a new one, and an existing article can inspire an editor to add more, whether to flesh out an idea that's already there or in indignation about a glaring omission. So my instincts say give it some time and room. In any case, if it does go to AfD, and the community votes to delete it, I can hardly object. Many thanks for explaining your reasoning. Fg2 10:35, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] List of historical Camden County, New Jersey municipalities

List of historical Camden County, New Jersey municipalities has been tagged for cleanup for over a year. It's just a list and some dates. I have no idea what the dates or indenting are supposed to indicate. Also, it has no references so we don't know where the data came from.

Clean it up. RJFJR 03:46, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

No. Fg2 03:52, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
You declined to remove the cleanup tag and I can't figure out how to clean it up so I nominated it at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of historical Camden County, New Jersey municipalities.
(I figured I should let you know because you opposed the prod. The prod was my taking the easy way out when I couldn't figure out how to clean it up. Unfortunatley, since I spend most of my time in the Category:Cleanup by month most of what I see are the poorer articles. I should get out and enjoy the good articles more often, but there are so MANY that need cleanup. And I get a feeling of accomplishemnt when I clean something up enough to remove a cleanup tag from months ago. Anyways, since you opposed prod I figured I'd let you know so you can make a comment at AFD.) RJFJR 16:27, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for letting me know. I'm not emotionally tied to the article, but might chime in later. Meanwhile, we'll see what the community has to say. If they say delete, then let it go. Fg2 01:55, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hiroshima Sister Cities

Hey, you replied that you removed Harrisburg from Hiroshima's list of sister cities. I was wondering exactly what list you removed it from? I noticed it wasn't on Hiroshima's page which is why I questioned it on other pages. I was just curious were you removed it from because its still on the list of sister cities for the US, and also on Harrisburg's page, so I am going to remove it from those two places, and state Hiroshima's talk page for the edit so no one disputes them being removed from the list. It must be listed in a few places.--Azslande 01:27, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi Azslande, I removed it from the list in Hiroshima#Sister cities. You can also cite Hiroshima's own web page to avoid disputes. I just located a list in English at Hiroshima's English web site. Hope that helps! Fg2 01:51, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

I can understand how a well-intentioned Wikipedian would want to remove said article, but I think this is a bit rash. Do you understand where I'm coming from? Please see the Daffodil Daniel talk page. Thank you. GroverTheGnome 08:04, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi GroverTheGnome, Here's a suggestion that can help you. Why not write your articles temporarily on your user page (or subpages). They don't have to meet Wikipedia's notability requirements. And when the subject becomes notable you'll be able to rename ("move") them to the titles you want. It's an easy way to get around the requirement for notability. So don't worry, you can still write the article on this subject and have it on Wikipedia, just in a different place. I hope that suggestion helps. Best regards Fg2 12:04, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Anatomy and physiology

Umm... Huh? Vandalistic blanking of a page counts as protest of the PROD notice? That's a pretty broad interpretation of the rules. And not an interpretation I've seen before. And not really an interpretation I would make. If you want to be considered as protesting the above PROD yourself, fine, but IMHO page blanking is vandalism, not PROD protesting. - TexasAndroid 14:36, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi TexasAndroid. I agree with you about blanking an article not being the same as contesting a deletion proposal (and it's in the policy too). But there's more to this one. There had been an earlier deletion proposal by User:JuJube. I removed the first deletion proposal on March 3. The blanking removed the second proposal. Your deletion proposal was the third, and I removed it on the basis of the first one having been removed (by me), not on the basis of the blanking of the article. Which is to say that on March 3 I protested the deletion proposal, so if there's to be a next step, it would be Articles for Deletion. Hope that clarifies matters. Fg2 21:03, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] (Continued) Misspelling vs. Alternative spelling

Hello. Last October we had a short discussion (now archived) regarding templates to be used on redirect pages. A few months ago I found the {{R from title without diacritics}}. I have been using it for a while and for the most part it seems ideal for many of the redirects that I deal with. It also allows us to sidestep the issue of misspelling vs. alternative spelling as well. Unfortunately, though, it does not provide a solution to dealing with redirects such as Honshû where the macrons are there, but they are not the preferred ones. Still, it works well for maybe 90%+ of the redirects. FYI. Bendono 03:02, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
