Fernando Matthei
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
General Fernando Matthei Aubel represented the Air Force in the Government Junta that ruled Chile from 1973 to 1990 after Gustavo Leigh was dismissed on 1978. Before he became a junta member, Matthei was the Minister of Health. Matthei was part of the junta from 1977 to 1989.
In September, 2005, Matthei admitted in a television program that he "did everything possible so that Argentina would lose" in the 1982 Falklands War with Britain. It is unlikely that Matthei's assistance, limited mainly to espionage was of any genuine significance. Argentina's defeat arose from the fact that it lacked the resources to engage in the first and only naval war since World War II. The Chilean government claimed it was not responsible for the actions of the dictatorship.
He is the father of Chilean Senator Evelyn Matthei.
